In this episode join us on a walking tour around the Old Street area which covers the London postcodes of EC1, EC2 and N1.

We start outside Imperial Hall on City Road, one of the most historic residential buildings in the east of London. The Grade II listed structure was built in 1903 and was converted to 63 high-end residential flats in 1983.

We head towards Old Street Roundabout, also dubbed Silicon Roundabout. Old Street Station, which is on the Northern Line, is located underneath the roundabout.

We then head along Old Street; which is a 1 mile street that runs from Goswell Road in Clerkenwell, via Old Street Roundabout, to Shoreditch High Street.

We make a turn from Old Street onto Great Eastern Street before heading down the little side streets around the area.

Old Street, Hoxton Square and Great Eastern Street host a thriving night life.

Old Street is in the heart of London’s dot.com hub, a.k.a. the Silicon Roundabout or Tech City. It is called as such because of the dense cluster of IT and technology companies, both established and start-up, in the area. Its main area lies broadly between St Luke’s and Hackney Road.

On our tour, at 21 minutes in, we walk through Clifton Street Food Market which is a street market being trialled by Hackney council. Due to the success of street food traders on other roads, they continue to look for new trading sites around Shoreditch to expand.

There’s an interesting looking Castle called Fare of London at 26 minutes in.

At 28 minutes in we walk through the historically significant Bunhill Fields Burial ground. As well as being a burial ground it has vital open space of ecological value. The site dating from the 1660’s has five enclosed areas containing 123,000 burials and over 2,300 memorials with a publicly accessible garden to the north. It’s the final resting place of many leading intellectuals, radicals and clergymen from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

Old Street is notable for having lots of graffiti with artists such as Banksy featured.
